National AIDS Spending Assessment (NASA) in the Republic of Egypt

The National AIDS Programme of Egypt, in collaboration with the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), has conducted a review to assess the volume and spending categories in Egypt to respond to HIV and AIDS. Total spending on responding to HIV and AIDS in Egypt has risen by 20% between 2007 and 2008, to stand at about 42,100,000 EGP (7,700,000 USD) in 2008 compared to 35,200,000 EGP (6,400,000 USD). The estimated amount of spending for the Ministry of Health and Population National AIDS Programme accounted for 27% of the total value of expenditure in 2007, with that of 2008 being increased at 37%. The activities targeting the general populations accounted for about 46% of the AIDS expenditure in Egypt in 2007 and decreased to 34% in 2008. 23% of the expenditure related to activities for people living with HIV and about 6 % were for groups most vulnerable to the risks of HIV and AIDS in the two years period.
