Dr Yamina Chakkar, Director, Regional Support Team for the Middle East and North Africa, UNAIDS

Yamina Chakkar leads the Middle East and North Africa Regional Support Team

in helping countries in the region to accelerate progress to achieve the targets of the 2011

United Nations General Assembly Political Declaration on HIV and AIDS.

She assists countries in ensuring that no one is left behind in the response to HIV and that key populations in particular are reached with life-saving HIV services. She also works to ensure that countries in the region improve data collection and reporting on HIV.

Dr Chakkar has more than 20 years’ experience working on HIV.  Having joined UNAIDS in 1999 Dr Chakkar has served as UNAIDS Country Coordinator for Togo, Benin and Mali as well as acting as Regional Support Adviser for West and Central Africa.

Dr. Chakkar began her career in Algeria as a Medical Doctor and was Head of the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine at the Blida University Hospital for five years. She later held the post of Director of the National Programme on HIV/AIDS in Algeria for six years.

Parallel to her work in public health, she worked for more than ten years as a lecturer in public health at the Medicine Universities of Algiers and Blida.

Dr. Chakkar is a Medical Doctor and holds a diploma in Medical Studies with a specialization in Preventive Medicine and Epidemiology. She also has a Masters in Biomedical Tropical Sciences from the University of Antwerp in Belgium.
